DC Relaunches All-Ages 'All-New Batman: The Brave And The Bold' Comic

If fans were bummed to learn of the cancellation of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" on the Cartoon Network following this upcoming season's run, they were extra bummed to discover an apparent cancellation of its DC comic at the end of October. While the animated series is still on track to end after this season, DC not only isn't canceling its comic book incarnation -- the publisher is relaunching it as "The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold" in November.

The Justice League Of Philosophy

So superhero philosophy now seems to be a recognised unversity endeavour. But how might certain superheroes – and their nemesis – embody such philisophical thoughts?

  1. I didn't know there was a documentary of DC's history coming out. That is looking like a must-see, especially because of the old-timey interviews.

Loved the philosophy link. I'm trying to think of a suitable quote for J'onn. I'm thinking Gandhi, but he's not really a philosopher.

Brave and the Bold got cancelled? That's quite sad. It was growing in me, and my little nephew was into it for a while (until my sister-in-law banished it...no comment....)

That Red Lantern Mera costume would've been soooo much better if she had gotten a better wig (or just dyed her hair red). It's a shame because the rest of the costume is so close to perfection and the wig just ruins it for me.

  2. I dig the look of the doc because the presentation reminds me a lot of Comic Book Confidential, which was my gateway into hardcore comics history. I also think the rare vintage interviews are swell, but between the source and s.o.p., they'll probably be brief puff pieces. I have higher hopes for the living interviewees, and I can't imagine anyone restraining Neal Adams without major edits.

Not really a-- Whah-huh? Liss, really? Superman, Aquaman, and your Flashes are not philosophers. They're all just good guys who do the right thing because they've got the power to do so. The Green Lanterns are soldiers following a doctrine. I would consider Batman and Wonder Woman ideologues, evangelizing and pressing adherence to their firmly established standards and beliefs.

Of the founding JLA, only J'Onn J'Onzz really qualifies as a philosopher. He's always questing and questioning, at least since the DeMatteis reboot, but there were even hints of it during the Conway run.

  3. I meant Gandhi wasn't really a philosopher. :)

J'onn is by far the most philosphical of superheroes, but I think philosophy can be applied to other superheroes as well. Especially Batman, when you look at the ethics of why won't he kill the Joker. Which, really the reason has nothing to do with ethics but with DC not wanting to get rid of a cash cow character...

Wasn't J'onn's "job" back on Mars described as a warrior-philosopher in the Ostrander series, or did I imagine that?

  4. Ooops! That's what I get for not reading thoroughly.
