You Are Riding On A Zeta Beam!

“Wh-wh-what’s h-h-happening?” Tin said.

Gold opened his eyes.  He wasn’t sure exactly how to describe it.  Yellow light washed above them like currents in a gaseous river.  Images from the lab stretched and faded from view: black-topped lab tables expanded like balloons into fizzling shadows, Doc Magnus’s desk whirled into a mess of wood and metal and papers like cream being stirred through coffee, and the lilac-painted walls puffed and faded out like clouds in an alien sunset.  And then there was nothing left but brilliant yellow light.

“We’re in a Zeta Beam!” Gold said with as much certainty as possible.

“Where are we going?” Platinum asked.

“I have no idea,” Gold said.

“Where are you bringing us?” Captain Boomerang demanded.  Though being wrapped up in Tina wasn’t really the position to be demanding anything with any modicum of dignity.

“Again, I have no idea,” Gold said.

Gold looked down.  The yellow light faded ever so slightly, letting in other colors.  The reverse of what had happened back at the lab started slowly taking place: beneath him fuzzy green clouds solidified into patches of grass, streaks of blue became the sky, wisps of white became fluffy clouds.  And then, the ground suddenly pressed beneath his feet.  Gold stood there, stunned, looking out on a sunny day on a very strange planet.

“AAAAAAHHHH!!!” I.Q. let out a scream of pure terror.

“Shut him up,” Mercury said to Iron, who restrained I.Q. within his grip.

“Will do,” Iron said, raising his hand in the form of an anvil.

“No don’t hit me again!  I’ll be quiet!” I.Q. said.

Iron lowered his arm.  “All right.”  He seemed a little disappointed at not being able to hit him.

“Where are we?” Platinum asked.

Gold turned to her.  “Didn’t you just ask me that five minutes ago?”

“Yes, but I thought if I asked it again you might know the answer this time.”

Gold didn’t bother responding to her.  He turned and regarded the members of the Injustice Gang, who were all restrained.  He didn’t want to bring them along exploring, but he didn’t want to let them roam free, either.  He looked down at his signaling device and pushed it.  “Strange?” he said, “do you copy?”

The signaling device only fizzled in response.

Suddenly, a low growl interrupted his thoughts.  He turned to see a group of beasts that could only be described as tigers with horns, stalking towards them.  In the position they were, however, holding the villains at bay, there was no way to fight them off.

“Oh, great,” said Mercury, “here comes the welcome wagon.”

Gold looked at the horrible beasts and then down at the signaling device in his open palm.

Hawkwoman

After dropping off her ornery husband, Hawkgirl flew her Thanagarian spaceship to Los Angeles, CA. It was there, from his modest apartment, that Captain Comet had recently sent out a psychic distress call. Unfortunately, even as she had felt the touch of the interstellar hero's
anguished mind, it had evaporated into an odd malaise. Consciously, Shayera wanted to help this fellow in need, but for some reason, she emotionally felt a great hesitation. Regardless, she was a decorated Thanagarian wingwoman tasked with protecting and serving the good. She would not be swayed from her path.

When no one answered, Hawkgirl smashed down the door to Adam Blake's apartment with her medieval mace. Inside, the furnishings were sparse, with little room for any evildoers to hide within. A quick survey turned up nothing out of order.

Suddenly, a shift in the air announced a presence Shayera had not previously detected. A hand gripped the back of her neck like a steel vice, and flung her out of the apartment, into the hall, and through a neighbor's door. As the Winged Wonder struggle to her feet, a burst of wind lifted her off her feet, across the unfamiliar room, and sent her crashing into a small wall-mounted personal bar. In her mind came another voice, but one she knew from the recent past.

"Where is the warp-box, Shayera? Where is the key?"

Hawkgirl didn't know J'Onn J'Onzz, the Manhunter from Mars all that well, as he was on his way out of the Justice League of America while her husband was on his way in. What she did know, was that she was sick of his crap, and that he had a catastrophic vulnerability to fire.

Swinging her mace at the twisted remains of the aluminum bar, the resulting sparks set the alcohol surrounding Hawkgirl aflame. Shayera's wings partially protected her, but they were themselves alight, so Hawkgirl had to be quick about using their flammability as a shield. While the so-called "Alien Atlas" crumpled into a corner like a frightened child, Hawkgirl storm out of the room, leaving sparking feathers in her wake. Reaching the roof of the apartment building, she stripped off her wings, and cast them over the ledge. Small patches of fire had been left in her wake, and something would have to be done soon to safe the old complex from becoming a tinderbox.

Hawkgirl climbed into her spaceship, and lifted off. As she was banking to return to the ever-growing inferno-in-the-making, she spied the Martian Manhunter come flying out a side window. She didn't know how effective he would be in the air over this building, but she wasn't terribly anxious to find out, either.

Flee the Scene?

Stand and Deliver?

Superboy

1961

"No Bizarro! NO!"

The queer reverso Superboy took the belief that "no means yes" to heart, and so encouraged, continued tinkering with the warp-box. A whole series of wormholes began to open up throughout the area, so rapidly the real Boy of Steel couldn't avoid one. The portal sealed up after him, as wormholes opened and closed like blinking eyes in the sky, a replacement materializing elsewhere instants later. Cosmic Boy nearly lost his lunch right there. "S-s-Superboy?" Saturn Girl cried "Oh my grife, you killed Superboy!" Wildfire shouted, "You Bizarro!" Lightning Lad barked, "Let's get him!"

As horrified as the Atom was at the prospect of having just radically altered the space-time continuum by sending the seminal super-hero of all time to parts unknown, his primary concern was still retrieving the warp-box. Like Karloff as Frankenstein, Bizarro kept waving the device out of reach of the attacking Legionnaires, chuckling and smiling in the face of their lust for vengeance. Luckily, these teenagers from the future might just offer enough of a distraction to allow the Mighty Mite to disarm Bizarro. That is, of course, unless Wildfire shouldn't happen to blast it from Bizarro's grasp, sending it toward a warp-hole. The Atom lunged for it, but the warp-box was swallowed by one blinking rip in reality, and the Tiny Titan found himself unable to avoid yet another.

Continue following the Atom down the rabbit hole?

Metamorpho

The year 2052.

That's according to Hex over there. I'm Rex, by the way-- Rex Mason. Some folks call me Metamorpho. I'm a super-hero from 1991, and I can turn my body into any element, so that makes me the "Element Man." Eh? So anyway, I got tied up into this weird event I could tell ya about, and that landed me here. This must be some kind of sinkhole in time, right? What are the odds of me, an old west cowboy, and two World War Two heroes all ending up in the same place, ya know? Hey Rock, pass me some beans, 'kay?

Holy Hannah! Mr. Unknown Soldier sir, I don't mean any offense, but I'd a never thunk in an ugly competition involving me and Jonah there, that anybody would be able to pull it away from us. But hey, I'm sorry man. Look, Hex has got you some fresh bandages. Best cover up before you get some kind of facial infection. Anyway, Hex tells me these portals open up kinda regular around here, and all kind of jerks come pouring out. There's these guys with transforming vehicles-- Hex is a real good shot with that future pistol of his. He can pretty well pick those guys off on his own. The giant robots, I can corrode with my powers, or gas their pilots. Those barbarians you talked about, Sarge? They ain't so tough.

So anyway, Hex figures as soon as we want, we can take our chances passing through the portals. He says he's gotten accustomed to this time, and it doesn't damned well please him to try starting from scratch. I know I'm sick of this post-apocalyptic Mad Max bologna. So what do you say guys? You want to head out into the wild yonder with me next time?

What the hell?
I'm already sick of this pasty clown?

CONFIDENTIAL
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

The following is a brief on the nature of the disappearance of intelligence agent codename: The Unknown Soldier.

Three months ago, Soviet troops captured what is believed to be a U.S. citizen traveling alongside the railroad through the Levashovo Settlement in Leningrad. This individual, self-identified as "Paul Raymond," claimed to be a defecting scientist. No documentation on this statement has been found. At the insistence of Raymond, troops searched the area for and located a device Raymond claimed he had absconded with from a U. S. weapons development operation. Again, there is no supporting evidence for this claim.

Raymond was questioned by the Soviets' newly formed Committee for State Security (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti; herafter: K.G.B.,) and after some weeks, convinced them of his intention to reveal classified information about U.S. scientific research to the communists. Raymond was allowed laboratory access in pursuit of developing a "key" to "unlock" the undefined abilities of his stolen device, as well as aiding the Soviets on other projects. Despite being supplied with the most current technological advances, Raymond was constantly noted as being frustrated with these, by his terms, "antiques." Regardless, Raymond's efforts have sped along several Soviet projects seen as detrimental to our interests.

Two weeks ago, U.S. intelligence learned that First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Nikita Khrushchev would be attending a demonstration of Raymond's mystery devices' capabilities. In advance of the event, our Unknown Soldier was sent to infiltrate. The Soldier's orders were to capture or terminate Raymond and his device with extreme prejudice. A master of disguise, the Soldier impersonated Khrushchev to maximize his ease of access. Unfortunately, Raymond looked on the Soldier's irritation in his disguise with suspicion, and the premature arrival of the actual Khrushchev sent the situation into a downward spiral. Raymond seemingly vanished before the Soldier could execute him, and the device was activated through unconfirmed means.

Based on eyewitness accounts, bizarre "portals" to parts unknown opened in the very air, and facing increasing gunfire, the Soldier exited the scene through one of these "portals," with a number of Soviet troops in pursuit. The "portals" vanished within a few minutes time, and it was by that point determined that the manifesting device had gone missing.

Whether the Unknown Soldier or other parties are in possession of the device is undetermined at this time. There is no further information about the whereabouts of our agent or his assignment at this time.

Early reports indicate that Raymond's successes on the Soviets' other projects were short-lived, and ultimately disastrous. The K.G.B. in fact suspects Raymond in engineering their sabotage. Investigation is ongoing.

Hawkman and the Atom

Irritable, the Winged Wonder flew down into a field near Will Magnus' lab he'd been directed to by the Atom. Ray, after all, wasn't inclined to compound his trespass on an associates property by inviting in a former friend who might end up destroying the place if he says the wrong thing.

The Atom couldn't know the pressure Hawkman was under, after a rogue Thanagarian faction began using an absorbascon to monitor the minds of every human on Earth. Nearly every fellow super-hero was now potentially a spy for this terrorist cell. Further, Katar briefly thought his wife Shayera dead, and was still wrestling with his guilt over killing several of his countrymen. More specifically, Katar was still hurt that his best friend, the Atom, hadn't leaned on him we his own marriage fell apart, and instead abandoned everything.

Ray Palmer was standing in the field, waving his arms to alert his best friend, whom he know dreaded meeting again. So much had seemed to go wrong with the world in his absence, and Ray blamed himself. He also felt a bit foolish and exposed, knowing full well he'd have to shrink to nigh-microscopic levels to elude Hawkman's keen eyesight. As Ray shrank to his standard six inches of Mighty Miteness, his Atom costume appeared, and he watched Katar Hol land.

Tense seconds passed as the two beleaguered heroes sized one another up, so to speak. Then, Hawkman began to raise his arm up, and with a slight grin, patted himself on the shoulder. The Tiny Titan bounded onto Hawkman, and for the first time in too long, felt like things were going to be alright.

Alright, Ray-- tell me everything

------

Hawkman just shook his head at the Atom's twisting narrative, but vowed to help his little buddy set matters to right. Just then, Hawkman received a call from his wife, warning "Katar, you and the Atom had best be ready to wing it like a Manhawk out of the Seven Hells. I've got a psychotic Martian on my tail, and we've got to pick up the trail of Captain Comet if any of us are ever going to get out of this mess!

Catch that Ride!

The Hawks and the Atom

Crisis On Earth-Blog: The DC Challenge

The Atom made his way to the lab of an associate, Dr. Will Magnus, and put together a teleconference relay that could seek out any Thanagarian vessels near Earth. To his surprise, he was able to almost immediately connect to Hawkman and Hawkwoman, alien policemen and his closest friends in the super-hero community. Normally, the Tiny Titan could travel over such signals as telephone broadcasts to reach a distant destination. However, between the vagueries of Thanagarian technology and the warning Hal Jordan gave him, he dare not make such an attempt at this time.

"I... I thought you guys were on leave."

Hawkgirl replied, "We are, but we still patrol the Earth from--" Before she could continue, Hawkman shushed her tersely. "Any information you give him-- they'll know." Ray reconsidered Hal's warning that the Hawks had become unstable. This paranoia and history of recent violence against fellow super-heroes wasn't helping. Still, the Atom needed a friend right about now.

"Look Carter-- everything seems to be going crazy these days, and I think it's all my fault. I was working on this experiment, when I was attacked by the Martian Manhunter..."

Hawkgirl blurted, "You too?" Hawkman again gave her the stink eye. Suddenly, both the Hawks grabbed their temples and doubled over in psychic pain. "...Captain Comet... trying to... contact ...us..." Again, the Atom feared for the Hawks' mental state.

"Katar, we have to help him."
"Shayera, he's another human. We can't risk it."
"I don't take orders from you, mister! I'm not about to desert a hero in his hour of need. I'm going to Los Angeles to help him."
"The hell you are!"
"Katar Hol-- you just try to stand in my way!"

"Damn it, Carter! Get off your high horse and help us out here!"

Through a clenched jaw, Hawkman growled, "I don't ride horses, Atom."

There was a moment of heavy silence, until Shayera let loose a snort, which set Ray to laughing. Once Hawkgirl got over the giggles herself, she said flatly, "Katar, I'm flying the ship to L.A. I'll drop you off near Ivy Town along the way."

"I'm at Will Magnus' lab, actually."

"Fine. I think I know roughly where that is." Katar scowled, "Don't I get a say in this?" Shayera smirked, "Not really, no."

Hal Jordan

... are you drunk?"

"No, of course not! I don't get drunk! I can hold my liquor!"

"Hal, maybe now isn't the best time, but could you ring on over here and give me a lift to the J.L.A. satellite? Neither my signal nor the old teleport tube seems to work."

"Can't. I gave up my ring for Carol Ferris, and now she's left me with nothing!"

"Good lord, Hal. You've got the worst luck with women. How could you do that to yourself?"

"You're one to talk!"

"What are you talking about?"

"That witch Jean, screwing around on you."

"What?!?!"

"When did you get back from the jungle, anyway?"

"No, wait, go back. What about Jean?"

"I heard you caught her steaming up the car windows with that lawyer friend of hers. That's why you divorced her."

"What? No! ...Ah, no. I was wondering what all these pictures of Paul Hoben were doing up on our walls. I guess I don't live here anymore."

"You're at your old house? S'creepy, Ray."

"Enough about that. If you can't help me, I'll need to reach someone who can. Do you know how to contact Green Arrow?"

"I dunno. Think he'sn Seattle somewhere with Dinah."

"How about the Hawks?"

"They went nuts. Attacked a buncha people. Real re-reculses now."

"Flash?"

"Dunno. He disappeared after the murder trial."

"What?!? Good lord! What about Elongated Man?"

"He'sn Detroit with Sue n' J'Onn ana bunch of ethnic kids pretendin' to be the Jaylay. I coulda flown you there, but I don' know a number."

"Manhunter?!? No thanks anyway. Aquaman?"

"He's lost underwater. Mystical stuff down there."

"Of course Superman is available?"

"Nah, he's been real gone since Supergirl died."

"That's terrible. Zatanna? Wonder Woman?"

"Hot!"

"But where are they?"

"Missin'."

"Red Tornado?"

"Blew up with the satellite. The whole world's gone t'hell. Red skies. Shadow demons. World's livin' and dyin'. S'amess."

Ray realized that the loss of the warp-box was surely the cause of this horrible state of affairs, and was more determined than ever to retrieve it. As delicately as possible, Ray dismissed the sorry shell of a man that was once a Green Lantern corpsman, and called the Midway City Museum. One way or another, the team of Hawkman and the Atom would fly again.

1986

At a truck stop in Sydney, Australia, the Atom spied a calender that informed him he had returned to Earth just four short years after his original departure. Although he had now lost both the key and the warp-box, the Atom was relieved to find himself near enough to his own proper place and time to effect some kind of change. Speaking of change, with little coin to spare, Ray took to a payphone to call his lab back in Ivy Town.

Disconnected?

Next, his home phone. No answer.

An Ivy University extension would have to do. From there, a short trek to his old lab. It was now an abandoned room, empty of anything save dust and cobwebs.

Hitching a ride on a little bird, the Mighty Mite made his way home. His keys no longer worked, but a keyhole would serve. Inside, Jean had obviously done some redecorating, but the telephone was about where he'd left it.

A call to the J.L.A. satellite again yielded a disconnect notice. The Midway City Museum reported that Carter and Shiera Hall were on a leave of absence. One after another, Atom felt almost as isolated from his friends as he had over the past few weeks, unable to reach almost anyone. Almost...

"Hal Jordan... are you drunk?"

"No, of course not! I don't get drunk! I can hold my liquor!"

As delicately as possible, Ray dismissed the sorry shell of a man that was once a Green Lantern corpsman, and vowed to find some vestige of the super-hero community he once knew.

So, who is still active in 1986?

Power Lords

Crisis On Earth-Blog: The DC Challenge

My name is Adam Power. Like you, I came from the planet Earth and, with the help of a special jewel, tried to save the galaxy from the tyranny of Arkus. I never considered the prospect that another, greater evil would destroy us all.

First came the giant robots, whose terrible weapons ripped through the populace of Meru, people of Shaya. The tiny masked men in their little vehicles were ineffective on the water world of Rana, but the Centurions were devastating. I and the other Power Lords fled from world to world. On Militron, we were lucky enough to find reinforcements among the C.O.P.S., until the whole planet became a Spiral Zone.

Finally, the evil lord brought his full super powers to bear. Steppenwolf and Mantis led armies of parademons, while DeSaad tortured information out of the few survivors in their wake.

Go now and warn them. Sgt. Rock, G.I. Joe and Captain Action. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The Warlord, Arak and Hercules. Tell them of our dire fate. Tell them, Darkseid is coming for them all!

The Adventure Continues!

The purple sphere, as bright as the sun (if the sun were, in fact, purple), filled every inch of space around Gold and the rest of his Metal Men.  They floated in a vast area with no discernible up or down and it wasn’t until the purple light faded that Gold realized they were floating in outer space.

But as he looked at the stars whirling around, none of the constellations seemed familiar.

He turned his head to see Platinum floating a few feet above him, with Iron and Lead not far behind.  The lifeless robot body of Tin floated behind them.  He couldn’t find Mercury until he looked up and noticed that the red robot had expanded into several large globules which pulsated noiselessly through space.

And, behind him, the Injustice Gang floated helplessly through the vacuum of space, clutching their throats, eyes bulging, desperately needing air.

Gold stretched out his arms and encircled the group of villains and towed them in towards him.  Even if they were pretty vile, that was no reason to let them die a horrible death.

Gold looked down at the planet beneath him.  They had yet to reach the upper levels of the atmosphere.  Clouds swirled temptingly across the planet’s surface.  He wondered if he would be able to get them into the atmosphere in time.

And that’s when something big and red and gold streaked by him and pulled the villains from his grip and flew back down towards the planet.  And no sooner had it gone than the red blur returned, in the shape of a man in a red suit with a gold lightning bolt emblazoned across his chest.

He flew towards Gold and grabbed his arm, then collected all the other Metal Men, even the lifeless Tin, and flew them down towards the planet.

Clouds swirled by and the weight of the atmosphere pressed around Gold’s body.  The sky turned from star-crusted black to regular sky blue and he found himself standing in the middle of a park on a very sunny day.

“Who are you?” Gold asked the man in the red suit and white cape.

“Why, I’m Captain Marvel.  Welcome to Fawcett City.  And who might you be?”

The Big Red Cheese

Gold introduced himself and the rest of the Metal Men.  He paused however, when he looked down at Tin’s body.  “This is…was…Tin.  Those men that you saved.  They took his responsometer out of him—without it, he’s lifeless.”

“Those men that were out in space with us.  They’re the ones who did this to Tin.  What have you done with them?”

“I took them to the Fawcett County Hospital.”

“Make sure that they are placed in jail as soon as they are able,” Gold said, “we need to get Tin’s responsometer back, and the device they used to teleport us here.”

Captain Marvel placed his hands on his hips.  “I see.  I think I can help you with that.”  He squinted into the sun as if thinking of a plan and then looked back down at Gold.  “But we’re going through a little crisis here in Fawcett City.”

“What kind of crisis?” Mercury asked.

Captain Marvel smiled.  He had a rather regal bearing about him.  “We seem to have lost Hoppy.”

“Hoppy?” Platinum asked, “who the heck is Hoppy?”

Marvel turned and regarded them with a look of astonishment.  “How could you not know who Hoppy the Marvel Bunny is?  He’s part of our Marvel family of superheroes!”

“Hoppy the Marvel Bunny?!” Mercury said, “oh, that is too rich.”

Behold: Hoppy the Marvel Bunny

“Where exactly are you fellas from, anyway?” Marvel asked.

“We’re from Earth.  And could you tell us where we are now?”

Captain Marvel tapped his chin thoughtfully.  “Well, that is strange.  This is Earth, and I’ve never heard of you Metal Men before.”

“I think we may have been teleported into another dimension,” Gold offered.

“Well, I suppose that’s possible,” Marvel said.  “Now, about your friend.  You’ll have to get his responsometer on you’re own, I’m afraid.  I can’t have Hoppy running around loose in his mortal bunny form.  But it shouldn’t be hard.  I’ll give you directions to the hospital.  You can get there two ways, the scenic route through the park, if you’re up for a nice walk, or through Fawcett.  Which would you prefer?”

Choices:

The Warlord

Ah man. This would have been cool. The Masters of the Universe versus Warlord, Arak, and Hercules, all part of Remco's MOTU knock-off line. It would have gotten gory, and led to an all out battle with the super-heroes. Instead, this event I planned was kind of cursed from the beginning, and I failed it as others failed me.

Bubba was straight with me, though, and kind enough to post the link you likely followed to get here. He's alright in my book. I will not make a "terrific" pun. To easy.

You Chose to Hold Off On Attacking

“Fine, Boomerang, you can have him,” Gold said, referring to the lifeless body of Tin.

“Gold!” Platinum said, “I’d expect something like that from Mercury, but you?”

“Quiet, Tina,” Gold said.

Captain Boomerang smiled.  “All right then.  Now we’re getting somewhere.”

“Take what you want from him and leave,” Gold said, arms crossed.

I.Q. stepped forward and bent down over Tin.  He removed the access panel from the robot’s torso, reached in, and disengaged Tin’s responsometer.

“Gold!  Aren’t you going to do something?” Tina asked.

Gold eyed her and then nodded ever so slightly.  He then shot the same I-have-a-plan look at Mercury, who acknowledged with his own nod.  Gold made sure Iron and Lead understood as well.

I.Q. took the responsometer and handed it off to Boomerang, who placed it inside of the device Gold noticed he had been carrying.  “Right then,” Boomerang said, “we’ll be off now.”  The small metallic device glowed, Boomerang’s thumb poised to trip a button.

Gold met Tina’s gaze and nodded.

“Not so fast, Boomerang!” Tina said, springing through the air and coiling around him.  Gold rushed him and then Iron and Lead piled on to Captain Boomerang, but not before he had tripped the switch.

The corridor seized with purple light, the air buzzed, and everything went dark.

You Chose to Take Tin's Place

Gold looked at Captain Boomerang.

“No, Boomerang.  Take me instead.  Leave Tin alone.”

Boomerang smiled.  “Surrender?  You’re making this too easy for us, mate.”  He reached for his belt and withdrew a boomerang.  It sang through the air and lodged in Gold’s chest, releasing a solution of aqua regia, a compound that could dissolve the noble metal gold.

The world faded away.  It’s all right.  Doc will probably forgive you and rebuild you.  If not, you’ll at least make a lovely bunch of bangle bracelets.

You Have Chosen to Avenge Tin

“No!” Gold shouted.  He stretched out and launched himself at Boomerang.  “What have you done to Tin?”  He wrapped himself around the man, leaving only his head exposed.

Captain Boomerang smiled, despite the position he was in.  “Can’t tell you, mate,” he said.

A crackle of blue energy caught in Gold’s peripheral vision.

“Iron!  Watch out for Kadabra!”  Gold shouted.  But before the magic would reach him, Platinum had grabbed Iron by the arm and pulled him to safety.  The energy ball sizzled through the air and then burnt a hole three feet wide into the ceiling.  Platinum and Iron landed in a tangle on the floor.

But as Abra Kadabra raised his hands to conjure a better spell, the corridor suddenly went black, and everyone, human, robot, and half-tree, froze in place.  At first Gold had thought it was an effect of the magician’s spell but he noticed Kadabra was frozen in place as well.

A point of light formed five feet away from Gold and then nearly enveloped the room like a very high-powered spotlight.  Particles of mist swirled about in the light and then the silhouette of a man appeared and coalesced into the shape of a man in a dark blue cloak and hat.

He raised a white, gloved hand and addressed Gold.  Gold felt, rather than heard his voice.  If he were human and not a metal robot, he probably would’ve felt a chill down his spine as the stranger spoke.

“Gold,” the stranger intoned, “you are and your teammates are needed elsewhere.”

“I?” Gold asked.

The Phantom Stranger.  Being awesome.

The man stared back at him.  His eyes, pupil-less and almost glowing, stared back and through him.  “Yes.  And the rest of your team.  Follow me.  I am the Phantom Stranger.”  He raised his hand and a breeze kicked up in the corridor.  “First, I shall dispatch these hooligans.”  He flicked his wrist and the Injustice Gang, still frozen in suspended animation, snapped out of the room in a whirl of mist.  The Phantom Stranger turned to Gold and extended his hand.  “Take my hand,” he said, “and you shall go where you are needed.”
