DC75: The Orpheus Protocol (JLA Classified #7, 2005)

The Super Buddies, formerly known as the Justice League International, found themselves wished into the bowels of Hell. To their great surprise, the soul of departed member and all-around innocent Ice resided there. Her two closest loves, saucy best friend Fire and macho ex-boyfriend Guy Gardner, entered into a deal recalling the tragedy or Orpheus in which they would be allowed to lead Ice out of Hell, so long as they never looked back along the way. Despite their misgivings about one another, Fire and Guy walked together silently, hearing no one following behind them. Finally, Fire couldn't bear it anymore, and snuck a peek.

"Beatriz..." Ice told Fire, "You always did care too much." In a flash of light, Ice vanished, leaving her friend on her knees screaming "NOOO!" Guy Gardner knelt down to hold Fire, and the pair of tough cookies sobbed. Seriously, this is one of the few comic moments that can make me get misty eyed.

Ooooh, nice pick. I remember feeling so frustrated that after all they went through, Bea looked back, even though I had a feeling it was coming.

It just goes to show how Giffen and DeMatteis can write pathos very, very well.

*Choke*

I had this one on file for a few weeks, then upcoming developments in Generation Lost had me figuring I'd better run it before the return of Dark Ice muted the impact.

Uggggh...don't mention the words "Dark Ice" to me. I'm blocking that all out from my memory as week speak. This selective amnesia thing is great for mischaracterizations and continuity mistakes.
